What to check after wind or hail—without climbing on the roof

A calm, safety-first checklist for documenting visible changes and preparing for a property-specific roof conversation.

After severe weather, begin with personal safety and factual documentation. A homeowner does not need to diagnose the roof or decide whether damage is covered before requesting a professional review.

Look from safe locations

From the ground or through an accessible window, note visible changes around roof edges, shingles, gutters, siding, vents, and nearby trees. Inside, look for new water marks or damp materials without entering unsafe spaces.

  • Record the date and approximate time of the weather event
  • Photograph visible exterior and interior changes from safe locations
  • Move belongings away from active interior water when safe
  • Use emergency services for immediate life-safety hazards

Keep contractor and carrier decisions separate

A roofing contractor can inspect visible conditions and describe a proposed repair scope. An insurance carrier determines policy coverage and claim outcomes. Keeping those roles clear helps prevent assumptions.

Do not place policy numbers, payment information, passwords, or private documents in a general website form.

Prepare a concise property summary

Share the address, what changed, where it is visible, whether water is actively entering, and the best contact number. That gives RoCo enough information to confirm current location and project coverage.

Property-specific help

General guidance ends where the actual property begins.

RoCo can review the location and concern, then explain whether the request fits current coverage and what the next property review should include.
